Why Ales Stenar matters

On a grassy cliff above the Baltic, fifty-nine large stones form the outline of a ship. Ales Stenar is shrouded in mystery, since no one is sure exactly why it was built or when. Visitors walk up from the fishing village of Kåseberga and gaze across the sea. It is quiet, windswept and magical at sunset.

Talking points

  • The stones form a ship shape about sixty metres long.
  • Its purpose is still debated.
  • The site is a short walk from the harbour at Kåseberga.
