Why Amsterdam Canal Ring matters

The canal ring is Amsterdam at its most beautiful. In the Golden Age, the city planned a semicircle of canals lined with merchant houses, and it still looks much the same. Walk the three main canals, cross the little bridges and peer at the gables, each different in shape. A boat tour at dusk, with the bridges lit, is classic.

Talking points

  • Three main canals form the ring: Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht.
  • Gable styles show how fashion changed over the centuries.
  • The ring is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
