Why Åre matters

Åre is the heart of Swedish mountain life. In winter the slopes above the village are among the country's busiest, and après-ski spills into cosy lodges and cafes. In summer the hills turn green and become a playground for hikers, mountain bikers and lake swimmers. The village sits beside a long lake, with views toward a pyramid-shaped peak, and it is a fine base for waterfalls and mountain walks.

Talking points

  • It is one of the best-known ski resorts in Sweden.
  • Summer brings hiking, mountain biking and festivals.
  • The setting beside Lake Åresjön is spectacular at sunset.
