Why Baden-Baden matters

Baden-Baden has been doing one thing for two thousand years: letting people lie in hot water. The Romans came first, and later came European royalty, composers and novelists, who left behind a grand casino, a promenade and a handful of very fancy hotels. Today you can still visit the old bathhouse, follow a park-lined river, and then walk straight into the Black Forest. It is slow, quiet and rather glamorous.

Talking points

  • Hot springs have drawn visitors here since Roman times
  • The town is also known for its grand casino
  • A leafy promenade follows a small river through the town
  • Black Forest trails begin on its doorstep
