Why Bamberg matters

Bamberg is one of those towns that survived history almost untouched, and it feels like it. The old centre climbs seven hills, there is a town hall built right in the middle of a river, and the local brewing tradition runs deep. Order a smoked beer in an old brewery pub and you will taste something you cannot find anywhere else. It is also much less crowded than Nuremberg or Munich.

Talking points

  • The old town is a World Heritage Site
  • The old town hall stands on an island in the river
  • The city is famous for its smoked beer
  • It is quieter than larger Bavarian cities
