Why Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park matters

This is the soul of Belgrade. Walls, gates and towers built by many different empires sprawl across a hill above the rivers, now turned into a large public park. Locals come here to walk, play chess and watch the sunset. From the ramparts you see the two rivers merge and New Belgrade stretch beyond. Allow time to explore the walls and the lower town.

Talking points

  • Many empires built and rebuilt the fortress.
  • The sunset view over the rivers is a local favourite.
  • Entry to the park is free.
