Why Berat Castle matters

Walk up the steep path and through the castle gate, and you enter a village on a hill. Families still live here, in houses among tiny Byzantine churches and Ottoman buildings. A museum with icons sits inside one of the churches. From the walls you look across the river to the neighbouring quarter with its rows of windows. Go late in the day for golden light.

Talking points

  • People still live inside the castle walls.
  • Small Byzantine churches dot the hillside.
  • The view takes in the whole town and valley.
