Why Białowieża National Park matters

This is one of the last stretches of old-growth lowland forest in Europe, and it feels like stepping back in time. Ancient oaks, spruces and fallen trunks fill the woods, and the European bison, the continent's largest land mammal, lives here. Part of the park can only be visited with a licensed guide, which helps protect it. Come for a quiet walk and, with luck, for a glimpse of wildlife.

Talking points

  • The forest is among the last remnants of Europe's ancient lowland woodland.
  • European bison live here and can sometimes be seen in the reserve.
  • Part of the strictly protected area can only be visited with a guide.
