Why Bremen matters

Bremen is the home of the fairy-tale Town Musicians, a donkey, dog, cat and rooster who set out to become musicians. You can find their bronze statue next to the town hall, and visitors rub the donkey's legs for luck. The old town square is flanked by a Gothic town hall, a cathedral and an enormous medieval statue. Narrow lanes and cafes run off in every direction.

Talking points

  • The Town Musicians statue is the symbol of the city
  • The market square is a World Heritage Site
  • The Roland statue is a medieval symbol of civic freedom
