Why Brno matters

Brno is Czechia's second city and it carries it with a shrug. There is a hilltop fortress with a grim past and a great view, a vegetable market in the old square, and a church whose bells ring noon at eleven. The city is also a showcase of twentieth-century modernism. With a big student population, you will find excellent coffee, wine bars and a relaxed pace that Prague can only envy.

Talking points

  • Brno is a big university city, so cafes and bars are lively and affordable.
  • Modernist architecture is one of its signatures, led by Villa Tugendhat.
  • Moravia, the surrounding region, is the heart of Czech wine country.
