Why Cathedral of St James matters

Look at the outside wall of the apse and you will see dozens of stone faces staring back, each one different. The whole cathedral was built without brick or wood, using carefully fitted stone slabs, even for the barrel vault. It is a masterpiece of engineering and craftsmanship, tucked into a small square in Sibenik's old centre.

Talking points

  • It is built entirely of stone, even the vault.
  • A frieze of carved human faces runs around the apses.
