Why Cesky Krumlov matters

Cesky Krumlov feels like someone folded a medieval town into a river bend and forgot to unfold it. Red roofs, winding lanes and a tall castle tower reflect in the Vltava, and you can paddle past it all on a rubber raft in summer. Most day trippers leave by evening, so stay overnight and wander the lanes when the lamps come on. It is small, so a day is enough to see the highlights and a night is enough to fall for it.

Talking points

  • The town centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The Vltava makes a tight S-shaped loop around the old centre.
  • Rafting and canoeing through town is a popular summer pastime.
