Why Constanta matters

Constanta is one of the oldest continually inhabited places in Romania and has been a port for Greeks, Romans and Ottomans. The old peninsula quarter has grand early twentieth-century buildings, a mosque and traces of Roman Tomis, and the sea promenade is a pleasant place to stroll. Just north, the resort of Mamaia offers the country's best-known stretch of beach for a summer break.

Talking points

  • Poet Ovid was sent to exile in ancient Tomis, now Constanta.
  • The old quarter sits on a peninsula jutting into the Black Sea.
  • Mamaia is the main summer beach resort just north.
