Why Delft matters

Delft is compact and photogenic: tree-lined canals, little bridges, old brick houses and a market square with a church at each end. The town is known for its blue-and-white pottery and was home to the painter Johannes Vermeer. Spend half a day walking the centre, climbing a tower and browsing shops for hand-painted tiles. It is a short train ride from both Rotterdam and The Hague.

Talking points

  • Delft blue pottery is still hand-painted here.
  • Vermeer lived and worked in Delft in the seventeenth century.
  • The town is an easy half-day trip from Rotterdam or The Hague.
