Why Delphi matters

Delphi sits high on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, with a huge view down a valley of olive trees to the sea. In ancient times people travelled here to ask the oracle questions about war, colonies and their own futures. Today the village is a handful of cafes and small hotels, and the site is a steep, atmospheric walk up through ruins. Go early, bring water, and pause at the theatre for the view.

Talking points

  • Ancient Greeks believed Delphi was the centre of the world.
  • The setting on the mountainside, above a sea of olive trees, is half the experience.
  • It is an easy day trip or overnight from Athens by car or tour.
