Why Grand Canal matters

The Grand Canal curves like an S through the city, and its banks hold hundreds of palaces from different centuries. The cheapest and best way to see it is on a public vaporetto, ideally on Line 1, with a seat at the front. Go at dusk, when the windows glow.

Talking points

  • It is lined with Gothic, Renaissance and baroque palaces.
  • Vaporetto Line 1 stops at nearly every landing.
  • Gondolas are costly; the water bus is cheap.
  • Evening light is the most beautiful.
