Why Jeronimos Monastery matters

The Jeronimos Monastery is one of Portugal's great buildings, covered in carved stone ropes, shells and sea creatures, a style called Manueline. It was funded in the age when Portuguese ships were opening trade routes. The two-storey cloister is the highlight. Entry to the church is often free, but queues are common, so go early.
