Why Killarney matters

Killarney is a small town with a big backyard. Step out of the main street and you are minutes from Killarney National Park, with its lakes, woodland, wild deer and a historic house. It is the classic base for the Ring of Kerry and the Gap of Dunloe, and tourists have been coming here for well over a century. Walk, cycle or take a horse-drawn jaunting car, then come back for a pub session in the evening.

Talking points

  • The national park starts almost at the edge of town.
  • Jaunting cars, traditional horse-drawn traps, still run through the park.
  • It is the starting point for the Ring of Kerry.
