Why Koli National Park matters

Koli is a ridge of hills rising above the huge Lake Pielinen. A path leads up to the Ukko-Koli lookout, and on a clear day the view across the lake and forests is regarded as one of Finland's classic landscapes. It was an inspiration for painters and composers. In winter you can ski and snowshoe, and in summer hiking and swimming are popular.

Talking points

  • The view from Ukko-Koli is a Finnish classic.
  • Painters and composers found inspiration here.
  • Trails suit both short walks and long hikes.
