Why Kuldīga matters

Kuldīga is a small town in the west of Latvia with an old-world feel. Red-tiled roofs, wooden houses and narrow cobbled streets lead down to the Venta river, where one of the oldest brick bridges in the region crosses the water. Right by the bridge is a low, wide waterfall that spreads across the whole river, and in spring you can sometimes see fish leaping upstream. It is quiet and good for a slow day.

Talking points

  • The waterfall is claimed to be the widest in Europe, spanning the river.
  • The old brick bridge is among the longest of its kind in the region.
