Why Kutna Hora matters

Kutna Hora grew rich on silver in the Middle Ages and once rivalled Prague in importance. Today it is a quiet town that is easy to reach by train, with a cathedral that looks like it landed from a bigger city and a chapel on the outskirts decorated with human bones. It is one of the best day trips from the capital, and the contrast between grand Gothic and the strange ossuary makes it memorable.

Talking points

  • Silver mining made the town one of the wealthiest in medieval Bohemia.
  • The cathedral and the ossuary at Sedlec are both UNESCO-listed.
  • It is roughly an hour from Prague by train.
