Why Laisvės alėja matters

This is the great promenade of Kaunas, a tree-lined pedestrian boulevard that runs for more than a kilometre. Shops, cafés and elegant interwar buildings line the route, with plenty of benches for people-watching. Walk it from the old town to the Church of St Michael the Archangel at the far end, and you cover a good part of the city centre.

Talking points

  • The boulevard is pedestrian only, and over a kilometre long.
  • It links the old town with the modernist new town.
