Why Lindenhof matters

Hidden up a few steps above the river, Lindenhof is a calm tree-shaded terrace where locals play giant chess and look out over the old town. This hill has been a lookout and gathering spot since Roman and medieval times. It is one of the best free viewpoints in the city, and especially nice at golden hour.

Talking points

  • Locals play outdoor chess here.
  • The hill was settled long before the medieval town grew around it.
  • The panorama takes in the river, churches and rooftops.
