Why Linderhof Palace matters

Linderhof is the only one of Ludwig II's castles that he lived to see completed. It is small compared with Neuschwanstein, but every inch of it is gilded and mirrored. The garden has fountains, terraces and an artificial grotto. It is a quieter alternative to the busier castles.

Talking points

  • It was completed during the king's lifetime
  • The garden has fountains and an artificial grotto
  • It is quieter than Neuschwanstein
