Maastricht

A southern city with a Burgundian feel, cobbled squares, hidden courtyards and an excellent food scene.

Why Maastricht matters

Maastricht, in the far south, feels different from the rest of the Netherlands. Its cobbled streets, grand squares and cafe terraces have a distinctly Burgundian, almost French or Belgian flavour, and the Maas river runs right through the middle. Churches have been turned into a bookshop and a hotel, and the food scene is among the best in the country. It sits right by the Belgian and German borders.

Talking points

  • It feels more Belgian or German than Dutch, with strong local food traditions.
  • A medieval church has been converted into one of the most beautiful bookshops anywhere.
  • The border with Belgium is only a few kilometres away.
