Why Matterhorn matters

No mountain looks more like a mountain than the Matterhorn. Its sharp four-sided pyramid rises above Zermatt and has become the symbol of Switzerland. It was first climbed in the 19th century in a famous but tragic expedition. Most visitors admire it from viewpoints, lakes and cable cars rather than climbing it.

Talking points

  • The first ascent in the 1800s ended in tragedy on the way down.
  • Reflections in alpine lakes make famous photos.
  • The peak straddles the Swiss-Italian border.
