Why Metropol Parasol matters

Locals call it the Mushrooms, but its real name is Metropol Parasol. This huge modern structure of wooden lattice stands above the Plaza de la Encarnacion. You can ride a lift to walk along its roof, with views across the old town. At the base are market stalls and Roman ruins found during construction.

Talking points

  • It is among the largest wooden structures in the world.
  • Roman ruins found during construction are on display at the base.
  • The rooftop is lovely at sunset.
