Newgrange
A passage tomb in the Boyne Valley, older than Stonehenge, aligned with the winter sun.
For storytellers
Why Newgrange matters
Newgrange is a huge grassy mound with a white quartz front, built roughly 5,000 years ago. A long passage leads to a chamber, and at the winter solstice the rising sun shines straight in. Visits go through the Brú na Bóinne visitor centre. It is one of the most important prehistoric sites in Europe.
Talking points
- It is older than Stonehenge.
- The winter sun lights the chamber.
- Entry is through the visitor centre.
