Nuremberg

A Franconian city with an imperial castle, a well-known Christmas market and a complicated twentieth-century past.

Why Nuremberg matters

Nuremberg carries two very different reputations. For centuries it was an imperial city, a hub of craftsmen and printers, and the hometown of the artist Albrecht Dürer. In the twentieth century it became the stage for Nazi rallies and later the war crimes trials. Today it handles both sides honestly, with a hilltop castle and a medieval centre alongside serious museums on the darker chapters. Its Christmas market is one of the most famous in the world.

Talking points

  • Albrecht Dürer lived and worked here
  • The city has a famous Christmas market
  • The imperial castle overlooks the old town
  • Museums here deal frankly with the twentieth century
