Why Oktoberfest matters

Oktoberfest is one of the biggest folk festivals in the world, and it has been rolling out the barrels for over two centuries. Giant tents, brass bands, rides and plenty of roast chicken fill the Theresienwiese for roughly two weeks from late September. Book a table early, wear traditional dress if you like, and pace yourself.

Talking points

  • The festival begins in late September
  • Locals dress in traditional clothes
  • Tent seats are often reserved in advance
