Why Oulanka National Park matters

Oulanka is a park of rushing rivers, rocky gorges and deep forest, close to the Russian border. The Karhunkierros, or Bear's Ring, is among the best-known hiking trails in Finland, crossing suspension bridges above the river. Short day walks from the visitor centre also reach rapids and viewpoints. In summer the days are very long, and in winter the landscape turns deep white.

Talking points

  • The Karhunkierros trail is a famed Finnish hike.
