Why Petrovaradin Fortress matters

Nicknamed the Gibraltar of the Danube, this fortress is a maze of walls, tunnels and ramparts over the river. Its clock tower has a twist: the hour hand is the long one, so that boatmen on the river could read the time. Inside there are artist studios and cafes, and the views of Novi Sad are superb.

Talking points

  • Its clock has the hands reversed, so the hour hand is the long one.
  • Tunnels run beneath the walls.
  • Artists work in studios inside.
