Why Plitvice Lakes National Park matters

Plitvice looks unreal at first glance: water in impossible shades of turquoise and green, flowing over natural barriers made of mineral deposits and plunging into the next lake. Boardwalks lead you right across the water and beside the falls. Autumn colours and spring flows are spectacular, and winter brings a quieter, icy version. Book ahead, arrive early and bring good shoes.

Talking points

  • The lakes are linked by cascades formed by mineral deposits.
  • Wooden walkways cross the water and run beside the falls.
  • It is one of Croatia's most popular natural attractions.
