Why Potemkin Stairs matters

The Potemkin Stairs are Odesa's most famous landmark, a broad cascade of steps that connects the city to its harbour below. They were built in the 19th century, and are designed with an optical trick: from the bottom only the steps are visible, and from the top only the landings. They became world famous through a classic 1925 film. Check current conditions before any visit.

Talking points

  • The stairway was built in the 19th century.
  • An optical illusion hides either the steps or the landings depending on where you stand.
