Why Preikestolen matters

Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock, is a square cliff platform that juts out high above the Lysefjord. The hike takes a couple of hours each way on a well-marked trail, and the reward is a stunning drop to the water below and fjord views in every direction. Stay well back from the edge, as there are no railings. Go early in the day to beat the crowds.

Talking points

  • The hike takes roughly two hours each way.
  • The cliff top is flat with no fences.
  • The trail is popular, so early starts help.
