Why Rovaniemi matters

Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland and sits right on the Arctic Circle. In winter it is a base for husky rides, snowmobile trips, reindeer sleighs and watching the northern lights, and in summer for endless daylight and river walks. The town was rebuilt after the Second World War, so it has a modern layout, but its real draw is the wilderness around it. Santa Claus Village, a short drive away, is a magnet for families.

Talking points

  • The Arctic Circle runs just north of the town.
  • It is the official hometown of Santa Claus, with a village you can visit all year.
  • In winter it is a base for aurora tours, huskies and reindeer.
