Why Rundāle Palace matters

Rundāle is the finest palace in the Baltics. It was built in the 18th century for the Duke of Courland by the same architect who designed the Winter Palace in St Petersburg, Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Rooms in gold and pastel, painted ceilings and a baroque garden fill the grounds. It is about an hour's drive from Riga, and a fine place to spend half a day.

Talking points

  • The architect was Bartolomeo Rastrelli, who also designed the Winter Palace in St Petersburg.
  • A formal baroque rose garden surrounds the palace.
