Saltstraumen
One of the world's strongest tidal currents, with whirlpools forming in a narrow strait near Bodø.
For storytellers
Why Saltstraumen matters
Four times a day, a huge volume of water forces its way through a narrow strait at Saltstraumen, creating whirlpools and a roaring current. The best viewing is from the bridge at the strait, ideally during the peak flow, which shifts with tides. It's also a famous fishing spot. Check tide times before going, as the show varies.
Talking points
- The currents reverse with the tides.
- Whirlpools can form at peak flow.
