Why Segovia matters

Segovia is a small city of stone, built along a ridge, and it is one of the most photogenic day trips from Madrid. Its Roman aqueduct strides across the town, the Alcazar looks like a castle from a storybook, and the cathedral rises over a lovely central plaza. Segovia is also known for roast suckling pig, which you can eat in grand old restaurants. Come early in the day before the coaches arrive.

Talking points

  • The old town and aqueduct are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The high-speed train from Madrid takes about half an hour.
  • Roast suckling pig, cochinillo, is the signature dish and is traditionally cut with a plate.
