Why Sibiu matters

Sibiu was one of the great Saxon towns of Transylvania, and it has been lovingly restored. The Large Square is lined with baroque buildings and the roofs have small oval attic windows that look like sleepy eyes, which locals will happily point out. It shared the title of European Capital of Culture in 2007, and since then cafes, galleries and festivals have filled the old lanes. It's calm, compact and very photogenic.

Talking points

  • Look up at the rooftops: the attic windows are said to give the city its watching eyes.
  • The upper and lower town are linked by steps and passages.
  • It shared the European Capital of Culture title in 2007.
