Skellig Michael
A remote island monastery off the Kerry coast, with stone beehive huts high above the sea.
For storytellers
Why Skellig Michael matters
Skellig Michael is a jagged rock rising out of the Atlantic, with a monastery perched at the summit. Monks lived in beehive-shaped stone cells here for centuries, climbing hundreds of steps to reach them. A boat trip crosses open sea, so landings depend on conditions and are limited in number. It is one of the world's most remarkable sacred places.
Talking points
- Monks lived in stone huts at the top.
- Boat landings depend on weather.
- The island is a UNESCO site.
