Why Speicherstadt matters

Speicherstadt is a maze of red-brick warehouses standing on wooden piles along narrow canals. They were built to store coffee, tea, spices and carpets, and some still do. Walk the bridges at dusk, when the buildings are lit and reflected in the water. It's one of the most photogenic corners of the country.
