Why St. Moritz matters

St. Moritz is the original winter resort, with a long tradition as a playground for the wealthy, sparkling light and a frozen lake that hosts horse races and polo in winter. In summer the Engadin valley's chain of lakes is a hiker's, cyclist's and sailor's paradise. The area is also the gateway to the Rhaetian Railway lines that wind through the mountains.

Talking points

  • The resort has hosted the Winter Olympics twice.
  • The Engadin's high valley is known for its bright, dry air.
  • Railways from here cross dramatic viaducts and high passes.
