Why Stuttgart matters

Stuttgart is the home of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, and car fans arrive here almost as pilgrims. But it is also a city of vineyards, forested hills and a good café culture, tucked into a valley that locals call the kettle. The two car museums are both beautifully designed and well worth the trip even if you do not know a camshaft from a carburettor. Add the botanical gardens and a leafy palace square, and you have a very pleasant stopover.

Talking points

  • Both Mercedes-Benz and Porsche are based here
  • The city sits in a valley with vineyards on its slopes
  • Its zoo and botanical garden are in a historic park
  • Stuttgart is a convenient base for the Swabian region
