Why Syracuse matters

Syracuse was one of the great cities of the Greek world, and its ruins reflect that grandeur. The island of Ortygia is the old centre, a maze of limestone alleys, baroque palaces and seaside promenades. On the mainland, an archaeological park preserves a huge Greek theatre and quarries. It is one of Sicily's most pleasant cities for walking, eating seafood and ending the day on the waterfront.

Talking points

  • Ortygia is a small island connected to the mainland by bridges.
  • The Greek theatre is still used for classical performances.
  • The city was a leading power of the ancient Greek world, in what is now Sicily.
  • Fresh seafood and granita are the local treats.
