Why Tartu matters

Tartu is the intellectual capital of Estonia, built around a university founded in the 17th century. The city centre is full of neoclassical buildings, a hilltop park, cafés and bookshops, and the student life gives it a relaxed, creative mood. It is a good contrast to Tallinn and easy to reach by bus or train. The Emajõgi river runs through the town, and in summer you can paddle or cruise on it.

Talking points

  • The university dates back to the 17th century.
  • The Emajõgi river flows through the centre.
