Why Trier matters

Trier was once one of the great cities of the late Roman Empire, and the evidence is still standing. A huge blackened city gate rises at the end of the pedestrian zone, a ruined bath complex sits nearby, and a massive Roman hall is still in use today. Add a cathedral, a market square, and vineyards on the surrounding Moselle slopes, and you have one of Germany's richest history stops. It is also a good base for wine country.

Talking points

  • Several Roman monuments here are World Heritage listed
  • The city lies at the start of the Moselle wine country
  • A Roman gate still anchors the old town
  • Its cathedral has Roman roots
