Why Uppsala matters

Uppsala is one of Sweden's oldest centres of learning and religion. The towering twin-spired cathedral dominates the skyline, the university has trained scholars since the 15th century, and students in white caps still celebrate spring with a famous, riotous festival at the end of April. A short ride out of town you can walk among enormous burial mounds from the Viking age. It makes an easy, atmospheric day trip from Stockholm, with riverside cafes and botanical gardens along the way.

Talking points

  • It is about forty minutes from Stockholm by train.
  • The great botanist Carl Linnaeus taught and lived here.
  • Walpurgis Night on 30 April brings students and picnics to the river.
