Why Ypres matters

Ypres was almost totally destroyed during the First World War and rebuilt with care after the war, including its great Cloth Hall. Today it is a centre of remembrance, with museums, cemeteries and the Menin Gate memorial. Every evening, buglers sound the Last Post beneath the gate, a ceremony that visitors find deeply moving.

Talking points

  • The Last Post is sounded at the Menin Gate every evening.
  • The Cloth Hall was rebuilt after the war.
  • The surrounding countryside holds many cemeteries and memorials.
