For storytellers

Why Andorra matters

Andorra is a small country with a big mountain personality. Tucked into the Pyrenees between France and Spain, it packs ski resorts, hiking valleys, thermal spas and tiny Romanesque chapels into a space you can cross in under an hour. Catalan is the official language, and the capital is the highest in Europe. In winter, people come to ski, in summer to hike and cycle, and all year round to shop. It is easy to combine with a trip to Barcelona or Toulouse.

Talking points

  • Andorra is a principality, and its official language is Catalan.
  • The capital, Andorra la Vella, is among the highest capitals in Europe.
  • Skiing in winter, hiking and cycling in summer, and spa days all year.
  • Its low-tax shopping streets draw visitors from both neighbouring countries.
  • The Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley is Andorra's UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
